Italian Mountain Troops Alpini

During World War II, Alpini divisions were deployed on several fronts. 1
In 942 the Italian Expeditionary Corps was sent to the Eastern Front to support the Wehrmacht.
It included the Alpini Julia, Tridentina and Cuneense divisions.
The Italian Alpini took an active part in the defense of the Don Front, but were outnumbered and surrounded by the Red Army troops.
The Alpini divisions were forced to retreat in a long and heroic march in terrible conditions across the cold deserts of the Russian steppe.
There were also serious clashes during the retreat.
The most famous is the Battle of Nikolayevka, which took place in January 1943.
