It featured a cast hull—a legacy of the M48 tank, which first appeared in the 1950s—and was powered by a supercharged, air-cooled diesel engine.
The turret was also made of cast steel and equipped with a 105mm gun featuring a thermal sleeve to prevent barrel distortion.
Other technologically advanced features for the time included a laser rangefinder and a ballistic computer, giving the M60A3 impressive combat capability.
Production began in 1978; the 3,600 units produced subsequently played a leading role for over 20 years.
