Towards the end of 1940, the RAF predicted that the appearance of the pressurized Junkers Ju 86P bomber series over Great Britain signaled the start of a new, sustained high-altitude bombing offensive by the Luftwaffe. Consequently, the development of a pressurized Spitfire variant featuring a new Merlin engine—the Mk VI—was initiated. As developing the new fighter would take time, an interim solution was urgently needed: the Mk V.
The basic Mk V was derived from the Mk I but powered by a Merlin 45 series engine. This engine delivered 1,440 hp at takeoff and featured a newly designed, single-stage, single-speed supercharger. Improvements to the carburetor also allowed the Spitfire to perform zero-G maneuvers without fuel supply issues. Supermarine converted a number of Mk I and Mk II airframes to the Mk V standard, and fighter units began receiving the model in early 1941. The majority of Mk V aircraft were manufactured at Castle Bromwich.
