Guizhou JL-9 Plateau Eagle

Guizhou Aircraft Industry Corporation first announced its intention to develop a new generation of combat trainers at the 2001 China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition. The goal was to replace the existing JJ-7 model and meet the new requirements of the PLAAF (People's Liberation Army Air Force); the aircraft was intended to prepare pilots for China's latest generation of combat aircraft—such as the Chengdu J-10 and Sukhoi-derived types like the Su-27SK, Su-30MKK, and Shenyang J-11.
The JL-9 made its maiden flight on December 13, 2003, just two years after the project began. This marked the shortest development time for an aircraft in the history of Chinese aviation, while successfully keeping costs low. In September 2009, the JL-9 passed all technical certification tests, paving the way for serial production for the PLAAF and PLANAF (People's Liberation Army Naval Air Force).
