The Chinese began developing the J-7 in the 1960s, based on incomplete technical data from the Soviet MiG-21F.
License production of the J-7 began in 1964 at the Shenyang Aircraft Factory.
The J-7's design featured a delta wing and a fully movable horizontal tail.
The J-7 reached Mach 2.05, had a service ceiling of 17,500 m, and a maximum range of 1,530 km.
Compared to the J-7, the J-7 was comparatively easier to control, had a higher climb rate, and demonstrated better supersonic and transonic performance.
