As the world's first operational jet fighter, the Messerschmitt Me 262 was one of the most advanced aircraft of its time. Development of this aircraft began in 1938, and the first prototype completed its maiden flight (still with a piston engine) in April 1941.
The first jet-powered version flew in July 1942. Series production began in November 1943, but two important reasons—one political and one technical—prevented its rapid introduction into front-line combat units.
The political reason was that the aircraft was intended to be used as a fast bomber rather than a fighter, and it took until late 1944/early 1945 for the aircraft to be officially used as a fighter.
The technical problem was the reliability and availability of the jet engines.
They had a service life of only about 10 flight hours, and production never reached the required volume.
The most important operational versions were the Me262A-1A Schwalbe interceptor and the Me262A-2A Sturmvogel.
The Schwalbe was built in various subtypes with different armament systems.
Despite all its problems, over 1,400 aircraft were built and entered service.
Although the aircraft was not as maneuverable as its piston-engined counterparts, its overall performance was superior to many other aircraft of its time. Several aircraft are still preserved in museums around the world.
