The Soviet MiG-17 fighter was more stable than its predecessor, the MiG-15.
The MiG-15 was unstable at high speeds, and excessively tight turns could lead to uncontrolled roll and subsequent spins. To address this issue, the fuselage was lengthened, small guide vanes were added to the upper wing surfaces to control airflow, and the wings were swept back by 45 degrees.
The additional space in the fuselage allowed for a redesign of the internal layout and systems, as well as the addition of a more angular tail fin.
These modifications gave the aircraft the high stability essential for an effective weapons platform.
The MiG-17 entered service in February 1953. The Fresco-A retained the original VK-1 turbojet engine of the MiG-15. The new Fresco-C, also known as the MiG-17F, was equipped with a VK-1F engine with afterburner.
The MiG-17PF, also known as Fresco-D, was equipped with a fixed-beam radar. The MiG-17PFU, Fresco-E, was the Soviet Union's first interceptor to have its cannon removed and four air-to-air missiles added.
