The F-111 Aardvark was developed by General Dynamics as an all-weather multi-role combat aircraft.
It originated from 1960s requirements for a long-range interceptor for the US Navy and a deep-strike (interdiction) aircraft for the USAF; however, since the Navy version failed to materialize, the project was ultimately realized as a dedicated strike aircraft.
The F-111 was designed as a two-seat, twin-engine aircraft featuring variable-sweep wings; its maiden flight took place on December 21, 1964. The first production aircraft were delivered on July 18, 1967. A total of 563 F-111s were manufactured. The F-111A is one of the early variants of the F-111 family; 158 units were built.
The F-111C is the export version for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).
Australia decided to order 24 aircraft in 1963 and received the first F-111C in 1968.
However, due to development delays and structural issues, acceptance of the aircraft by the Royal Australian Air Force was delayed until 1973.
