The Unimog S 404 (also known as the Unimog S) is the most widely produced and arguably the most legendary model in the Unimog series; it was manufactured by Mercedes-Benz from 1955 to 1980. Development began in 1953, based on the civilian Unimog 411. Unlike its predecessors (which were designed as "implement carriers"), the S model was developed specifically for tactical military use. The Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) played a key role in its success.

Around 64,242 units were produced during the 25-year manufacturing run, making it the best-selling Unimog. It was exported to armed forces worldwide and also used by fire departments and forestry operations.
