The Blackburn Buccaneer S.2B was a British two-seat low-level strike and fighter-bomber variant of the Buccaneer, operated primarily by the Royal Air Force (RAF). It was derived from the Buccaneer S.2 developed for the Royal Navy and entered service with the RAF in the early 1970s.

The Buccaneer was originally developed as a carrier-based strike aircraft for the Royal Navy. Its particular strength lay in high-speed, low-level flight, allowing it to carry a substantial weapons load even at very low altitudes.

Characteristic features of the S.2B
Externally, the S.2B was largely identical to the S.2 but featured extensive modernization of its operational systems. Key features included:

• two Rolls-Royce Spey Mk.101 turbofan engines
• a two-seat cockpit accommodating a pilot and a weapon systems officer
• distinctive, highly swept wings
• a large internal weapons bay located between the engines
• four under-wing hardpoints for additional external stores
• folding wings for carrier operations (on the original S.2 variants)
• a ​​robust airframe designed for extreme low-level flight
• upgraded avionics and navigation/attack systems

The S.2B variant was also equipped to carry British Martel air-to-surface missiles, enabling it to engage both maritime and ground targets.

RAF Service
Following the Royal Navy's withdrawal from operating conventional fixed-wing aircraft carriers, the RAF took over a portion of the Buccaneer fleet. Within the RAF, the S.2B served primarily as a strike/attack aircraft.

A significant deployment occurred during the 1991 Gulf War. RAF Buccaneers flew missions against Iraqi targets alongside Tornado GR.1 aircraft; notably, they acted as laser designators, illuminating targets for laser-guided bombs dropped by other aircraft.

Thanks to its exceptional low-level flight characteristics and heavy weapons payload, the Buccaneer remained in service with the RAF until 1994.
