Plastic model kit for a prototype of the Chinese Chengdu J-36 heavy stealth fighter aircraft (PLAAF)
  • Scale: 1:144
  • Dimensions (assembled): Length 153 mm / Wingspan 157 mm
  • 11 parts
  • Snap-fit kit; no glue required
  • Unassembled and unpainted
  • Paint not included
The aircraft designated as the Chengdu J-36 is a Chinese heavy stealth fighter prototype currently undergoing testing by the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC). Note on correct designation: "J-36" is not yet an officially confirmed Chinese type designation but rather a provisional label used by military analysts. It is derived, in part, from the serial number "36011" visible on the first known prototype.

Distinctive Design
The J-36 differs significantly from previous Chinese fighter aircraft. It features:
  • a tailless, highly swept double-delta/diamond wing configuration
  • no vertical stabilizers
  • three engines
  • two side air intakes plus a prominent air intake on the dorsal fuselage
  • a very large, wide fuselage
  • a side-by-side cockpit for two crew members
  • internal weapon bays to maintain stealth characteristics.
The side-by-side cockpit is particularly noteworthy. According to Janes, this layout suggests a large long-range fighter or fighter-bomber concept rather than a classic single-seat air superiority fighter.

Three Engines
The triple-engine configuration is particularly unusual. Two engines are located in the rear fuselage, while a third is fed by a separate dorsal air intake. The exact engine configuration has not been publicly confirmed.

The unusual configuration is likely linked to requirements for long range, heavy payload capacity, and high speed. Consequently, the J-36 is frequently viewed as a potential component of a future Chinese "system of systems" that could encompass manned aircraft alongside unmanned escort aircraft and long-range weaponry.

Armament and Operational Role
Weapons are expected to be carried primarily in internal bays. Imagery suggests the presence of a large central weapons bay and additional smaller bays; however, the precise size and number of weapon stations remain unconfirmed.

Potential roles under discussion include:
  • Air superiority
  • Long-range interception
  • Long-range fighter-bomber operations
  • Engagement of high-value targets
  • Escorting or commanding unmanned combat aircraft
  • Potential attacks on enemy aerial refueling tankers and AWACS aircraft.
Development Status
The prototype was first publicly revealed during a flight near Chengdu on December 26, 2024. Since then, additional prototypes and various stages of development have been observed. The program remains in the flight-testing phase; serial production or entry into service with the PLAAF has not been publicly confirmed.
