During World War II, the RSO was developed as a German prime mover designed to remain operational even under the most adverse conditions, such as deep snow. A 70 hp V8 gasoline engine (3,517 cc displacement) and a 4-speed transmission were housed in the front section, driving the rear axle differential and drive sprockets via a driveshaft.

The first production model, the RSO/01, featured a rounded cab made of pressed sheet steel. Snow chains with a width of 60 cm could be fitted for operation on poor terrain. Series production began in October 1942; starting the following spring, the cab floor of the RSO/01 was raised by approximately 30 mm to prevent contact with the snow chains. The RSO was used for a variety of tasks, including as an artillery prime mover and for transporting supplies.
