The Eagle V 6x6 San is the Bundeswehr’s modern protected medical vehicle, developed in response to the changing demands of 21st-century military operations. Experiences—particularly in Afghanistan—demonstrated that conventional medical vehicles were no longer sufficiently capable of withstanding the growing threats posed by mines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and hostile fire. At the same time, there was a need to provide medical care to the wounded and transport them safely while in the immediate vicinity of the battlefield.
The Eagle vehicle family from manufacturer General Dynamics European Land Systems was selected as the basis, having already proven its worth within the Bundeswehr through the Eagle IV and Eagle V variants. To meet the specific requirements of the medical service, a specially developed 6x6 version was created, featuring an additional axle and a significantly enlarged superstructure. This allowed for a substantial increase in both payload capacity and available interior space.
The Eagle V 6x6 San is equipped with a powerful six-cylinder diesel engine producing approximately 311 hp, permanent all-wheel drive, and a third steerable axle, ensuring high mobility despite a gross weight of just under 17 tonnes. Its protected safety cell offers comprehensive protection against gunfire, shrapnel, mines, and IEDs. Key characteristics include the tall medical superstructure, the distinctive armored cell, and the modern three-axle chassis.
The interior accommodates two patients on stretchers, allowing for medical care to be administered while the vehicle is in motion. Consequently, the vehicle serves as a vital component of the Bundeswehr’s protected casualty transport chain, enabling the safe evacuation of the wounded even under combat conditions.
