The Fairchild C-123 Provider was a twin-engine military transport aircraft developed for the United States Air Force in the 1950s. Originally conceived as a transport glider project, it evolved into a high-performance transport aircraft. The C-123 was specifically designed for operations on short and unpaved runways and could transport troops, equipment, supplies, and the wounded even under challenging operational conditions.

The Fairchild C-123B Provider variant was the most important early production version. Powered by two high-performance radial engines, it was characterized by its robust construction, high reliability, and excellent short takeoff and landing capabilities. This made it particularly suitable for operations in remote regions where larger transport aircraft could not operate.

During the Vietnam War, the Provider played a significant role. It was used for transporting troops and supplies, for parachute drops, evacuation missions, and special operations. The further developed Fairchild C-123K Provider received two small jet engines under the wings in addition to its piston engines. These significantly improved takeoff performance, climb rate, and operational capabilities in high temperatures and on short runways. This made the C-123K particularly well-suited to the demanding conditions in Southeast Asia.

Depending on the configuration, the Provider could transport approximately 60 fully equipped soldiers or several tons of cargo. Its large rear loading ramp facilitated the rapid loading and unloading of vehicles, supplies, and paratroopers. Due to its versatility, it was used not only by the US armed forces but also by several other nations.
