Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation had never built a combat aircraft before designing the TBF-1 Avenger.
The XTBF-1, which first flew in August 1940, was a solid machine with a robust airframe, wings with slant hinges that allowed them to fold alongside the fuselage, an internal bay for torpedoes or other ammunition, ample fuel, and a powered dorsal turret.
Eastern Aircraft received a follow-up contract and delivered nearly identical models, known as TBM, in March 1942.
