The Pacific theatre of the Second World War is where carrier aviation, both Japanese and American, played the most significant role. From Pearl Harbor to the end of the war, battles involving aircraft of the U.S. Navy and the Imperial Japanese Navy were relentless. In late December 1940, the U.S. Navy ordered all carrier-based aircraft to be painted entirely in Light Grey. Subsequently in August 1941, the upper surfaces of aircraft belonging to the Pacific Fleet’s Battle Force were painted in Blue- Grey, while the lower areas would retain the previous Light Grey color. Over the following months, gradually more aircraft were painted in this scheme. By February 1942, it was formally ordered that all U.S. Navy aircraft, both carrier-based and land-based, were to be painted in the Blue-Grey and Light Grey scheme. This initial camouflage scheme remained in use until January 1943, when a new tricolor camouflage scheme was introduced for carrier-based aircraft. This consisted of Sea Blue for the upper surfaces, Intermediate Blue for the midsection, and Insignia White for the undersides.

With this Solution Book, you can paint any U.S. Navy aircraft with the early Second World War camouflage, including the iconic F4U Corsair, F4F Wildcat, TBD-1 Devastator, TBF/TBM Avenger, SBD Dauntless, and many others. Most of the techniques described are optional, and it’s up to you to decide whether to apply them or not. If you want to improve your painting and weathering skills with these techniques, we recommend trying them all. This box includes all the necessary and most suitable products to create the effects described. By following the application order and drying times, you’ll be rewarded with excellent results. You can recreate any level of wear on your models by varying the intensity of each effect. The model used in this book is the Douglas TBD-1 Devastator in 1/48 scale by GWH. Now, choose your favorite model and let a master modeler guide you step by step!
