The Saunders-Roe SR.53 was a prototype combined jet and rocket-powered interceptor aircraft developed for the Royal Air Force (RAF) in the early 1950s.
It was intended to be used as an interceptor, utilizing its rocket engine to climb quickly and close in oncoming enemy bombers at high speed, after which the aircraft would return to base using its jet engine.
