The Tornado is the result of a joint project between Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom to develop a high-performance multi-role combat aircraft.
The result was a twin-engine, two-seat aircraft with variable wing geometry, specifically designed for its primary mission: a low-altitude, supersonic fighter capable of "following" terrain. Optimized for attack missions, the Tornado IDS (Interdictor/Strike) was the first variant to enter service with the operational air forces of the three countries participating in the project.
The aircraft delivered to the British Royal Air Force were designated GR.1 and saw active service during the 1991 Gulf War, completing numerous missions.
