American gangsters of the 1930s shaped the image of organized crime in the United States. Aided by the Prohibition era, numerous criminals rose to become powerful underworld bosses. They made their money through activities such as bootlegging, gambling, racketeering, and bank robberies. Among the most famous figures of the time were Al Capone, John Dillinger, and the criminal duo Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow.

Escalating violence and spectacular crimes prompted a stepped-up response from law enforcement agencies, particularly the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). By the mid-1930s, many of the most notorious gangsters had been captured or killed in shootouts. Despite their criminal activities, newspaper reports and Hollywood films transformed some of them into legendary figures of American pop culture - figures whose stories continue to inspire books, movies, and documentaries to this day.
