The main variant of the Grumman Wildcat entered service with the US Navy in 1940-41.
The folding wings allowed significantly more Wildcats to be parked aboard aircraft carriers.
At the start of the war, these carrier-based aircraft became the backbone of the US Navy.
They were crucial in the Battle of Midway and the Coral Sea, although they were not as fast or maneuverable as the longer-range Zeros.
