The Churchill infantry tank has a very special design with its extremely long chassis and the all-round tracks. It was well armoured. As the war progressed it was produced in several versions, which were increasingly more heavily armoured and equipped with better armament.
The 39,626 kg Mk.III entered service in March 1942.
It had a 6-pounder gun in the fully welded turret, and the hull-mounted howitzer of earlier variants was replaced by a machine gun.
It had its baptism of fire in the Second Battle of El Alamein in October 1942, in which six Mk.IIIs took part. The Mk.III was also involved in the failed landing at Dieppe in northern France.
