The ZIS-5 was a Soviet 4x2 truck produced from October 1933 by the Moscow ZIS plant (Zavod imeni Stalina = Stalin Plant). The ZIS-5 proved to be an excellent vehicle; its engine ran even on low-grade fuel, and the vehicle mechanics were simple, robust, and insensitive to the harshest operating conditions. It could hold its own against the cumbersome Russian trucks. The ZIS was produced in various versions. Ambulances, tanks, cranes, and many other vehicles were also based on the ZIS chassis. During World War II, the simplified ZIS-5V version was produced. The ZIS-5 was an indispensable vehicle of the Red Army.
