In 1934, Panhard began production of the Panhard 178 armored reconnaissance vehicle, designed for cavalry reconnaissance. These vehicles featured a rear engine, all-wheel drive, and a 25 mm anti-tank gun as their primary armament. Production continued until mid-June 1940, with 527 vehicles manufactured.
The Panhard 178 entered combat with French cavalry units in the spring of 1940 and earned an outstanding reputation. Military experts widely considered it one of the best vehicles in its class.
After the defeat of France in June 1940, approximately 190 of these armored reconnaissance vehicles were taken over by the German armed forces, while French factories produced several dozen more for the Wehrmacht. The Germans renamed them Panzerspähwagen P204(f). Some were converted into command vehicles by installing high-roof antennas covering most of the top of the hull. These modified versions received the additional designation "Funk" (Radio) and served both on the Eastern Front and in occupied France.
