The Panzerkampfwagen I was the first tank produced in significant numbers by the Wehrmacht and played a crucial role in building up the German armored forces in the 1930s. Originally designed as a training vehicle, it was also used in the early years of the war due to a lack of alternatives.

The Ausf. A was the first production version and featured an air-cooled engine and a running gear with four road wheels per side. However, due to the limited engine power, the vehicle proved to be underpowered. To address this weakness, the Ausf. B received a more powerful engine and a lengthened chassis with an additional pair of road wheels, improving handling and reliability.

Both variants were armed with two 7.92 mm machine guns in a rotating turret. The Panzerkampfwagen I saw action in the Spanish Civil War and at the beginning of World War II in Poland, France, and the Balkans. However, as the war progressed, its armament and armor became inadequate, leading to its gradual withdrawal from frontline service and its relegation to training, security, and support roles.
