For this reason, the Panzer III Ausführung N was built.
In this version, the 5cm gun of the Panzer III was replaced with a short-barreled 7.5cm KwK.
From June 1942 to August 1943, 663 tanks were retrofitted, with a further 37 being converted in 1944.
In the summer of 1942, these tanks appeared on the battlefield.
They were equipped with HE shells and proved extremely effective in reinforcing ground troops. They were used in newly formed heavy tank battalions to make up for the shortage of Tiger I tanks.
As a support tank, the Panzer III N was easy to handle and very reliable, and fought on many fronts in the second half of World War II.
