In the late 1960s, the Norwegian military began a comprehensive modernization program for the M24 Chaffee fleet, including the introduction of a new 90 mm gun, a new, more powerful engine, a new transmission, and various other improvements.
As part of this modernization program, it was decided that the modernized Chaffee (NM116) required a support vehicle.
This led to the development of the NM130 recovery vehicle.
