The M24 Chaffee was developed as the successor to the M3/M5 Stuart light tanks and officially entered service in 1944. It featured sloped armor on the turret and hull and utilized the considerable firepower of its 75mm gun, which had originally been developed for the B-25 bomber. Unusually for a US tank, it employed a torsion bar suspension system. The Chaffee saw action before the war's end as Allied forces swept through France and Western Europe and fought in Italy. Post-war, it was deployed in major 20th-century conflicts such as the Korean War and the Indochina War.
