The tank is armed with a 125 mm smoothbore gun capable of firing both conventional kinetic energy munitions and guided missiles. This armament is complemented by a coaxial machine gun and a remote weapon station mounted on the turret. Of particular note is the modern fire control system with thermal imaging and digital target tracking, enabling the ZTZ-99B to fight effectively even at night and in poor visibility.
In terms of protection, the ZTZ-99B features a combination of composite armor and modular reactive armor, as well as likely an active protection system capable of detecting and jamming incoming projectiles. The vehicle weighs approximately 55–60 tons and is powered by a high-performance diesel engine, providing high speed and excellent off-road mobility.
Overall, the ZTZ-99B represents a significant advancement over previous Chinese tanks and is comparable to modern Western and Russian main battle tanks.
