Although the “190” or “Baby Benz” was the entry-level version of the Mercedes product range, it still contained important stylistic and technical innovations.
The design, with a successful mix of style and elegance, later influenced the cars of the higher segments of future Mercedes production. From a technical point of view, the car adopted a longitudinal front engine, rear-wheel drive and disc brakes on all four wheels, a MacPherson front end and “multilink” rear suspension.
The first versions produced were equipped with two petrol engines of 1998 cm3 with carburetor or, in the 190E version, with injection.
Shortly afterwards, the sports version 2.3 16V was introduced, which was also used in sporting brand competitions such as the “Nürburgring Champions Race Cup” in 1984, in which famous drivers of the time and some “old masters” of Formula 1 took part.
