As a transport system connecting Earth with space, the Space Shuttle—development of which was initiated by NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) as early as 1972—played a pivotal role.
From its successful maiden flight with *Columbia* (Orbiter 1) in 1981 to its retirement in 2011, a total of 135 missions were carried out.
The Space Shuttle made a decisive contribution to the advancement of space exploration: it enabled a wide range of experiments within the integrated "Spacelab" module, conducted resupply flights, and performed diverse tasks—such as the modular assembly of the International Space Station (ISS) and the deployment of space telescopes and satellites.
Although *Columbia* and *Challenger* were tragically lost in accidents, *Atlantis* continued its missions: in May 1989, it launched the Venus probe *Magellan*; in October of the same year, the Jupiter probe *Galileo*; and in 2000, it completed an assembly and resupply mission for the International Space Station.
The successful conclusion of its final mission marked the end of an era of space exploration spanning more than 30 years—an era significantly defined by the Space Shuttle.
