The Mk.III variant was built and used during wartime and entered operational service at the turn of 1941/42.
Compared to the earlier versions, it had an improved hull and was equipped with power-operated gun turrets.
Due to its long range and heavy armament, the type proved to be a very dangerous opponent for the Kriegsmarine's submarines, which were also able to defend themselves against long-range Luftwaffe fighters.
