In 1625, while Sweden was busy building an empire around the Baltic Sea, the Swedish King Gustav Adolf ordered new warships.
Among them was the Vasa.
On her maiden voyage in 1628, the Vasa set sail and fired a salute.
But after just a few minutes of sailing, the ship began to list.
It righted slightly—and then listed again, and to everyone's horror and disbelief, the glorious and mighty warship suddenly sank.
