The USS Southerland was commissioned on December 22, 1944.
She joined Task Force 38 in July 1945 for attacks on the Japanese home islands.
The destroyer escorted carriers and bombarded Honshu and Kamaishi until the Japanese surrender.
She covered troop landings at Yokosuka and Huttu Saki and was the first warship to enter Tokyo Bay for the surrender ceremony.
