The M4A3(76)W VVSS Sherman was a late-production variant of the Sherman tank, entering production in 1944. It was equipped with the more powerful 76mm M1A1 or M1A2 gun, which offered significantly greater armor-piercing capability against enemy tanks than the earlier 75mm gun. The "W" stands for "Wet Stowage," an improved ammunition storage system in which rounds were housed in water-jacketed bins. This design drastically reduced the risk of vehicle fires following a hit and increased crew survivability.

Unlike the later HVSS version, this model retained the proven VVSS (Vertical Volute Spring Suspension) system, featuring vertically mounted coil springs. Although it utilized narrower tracks and a simpler suspension setup than the HVSS, it was considered robust, reliable, and easy to maintain.

Many late-production vehicles were fitted with track end connector extensions, known as "duckbills." Mounted on the outer track connectors, these extensions increased the track contact area and reduced ground pressure, significantly improving mobility on soft terrain such as mud, snow, or sand. For operations in winter conditions, the tracks could also be fitted with "ice cleats." These bolt-on cleats provided better traction on icy or snow-covered roads and paths, enhancing the vehicle's off-road capability.

Other late-production features included enlarged driver's hatches, reinforced frontal armor, a turret equipped with a loader's hatch, and numerous detailed improvements that optimized both manufacturing and operational effectiveness. The M4A3(76)W VVSS saw service in Europe and the Pacific during the final months of the war, bridging the gap between the early 76mm Shermans and the later HVSS variants, which offered superior cross-country mobility and a smoother ride thanks to their improved suspension systems.
