The armed forces of the National Liberation Front (NLF) consisted of both regular units of the North Vietnamese Army and irregular units. The term "Viet Cong" was used as a generic term for NLF soldiers, but in general iconography, it refers to the irregular guerrillas.
The Viet Cong were armed with Soviet-made weapons such as the ubiquitous AK-47 Kalashnikov assault rifle and the semi-automatic SKS carbine.
In January 1968, they participated in the massive Tet Offensive on the night of the Vietnamese New Year.
