Yugoslavia was invaded on April 6, 1941 and formal resistance lasted barely ten days.
However, the German-led occupation proved particularly harsh, leading to a large-scale partisan campaign against the Axis powers.
The resistance was mainly organized by the communists led by Tito.
What began as a guerrilla war in the first three years developed into a more conventional warfare from the second half of 1944.
At the end of the war, Tito's partisans numbered 800,000 men and were organized into four field armies.
The Partisans posed a constant threat to the occupying forces, and fighting was fierce as Axis troops attempted to neutralize this threat in a series of offensives.
