In early 1940, before the German invasion of France, part of the French Foreign Legion was sent back to France from Africa.
Here they got a strange new kind of uniform.. And skis!
The hardened fighters and experienced desert warriors were suddenly equipped as mountain troops. They received snow boots, heavy parkas and snow capes. They were sent to Finland, where the Allies helped Finnish soldiers fight the Soviets.
But before the legion left for Finland, the war in Finland was over.
But there was another place the Legion could use their new equipment. The Germans had just invaded Norway.
The Legion received orders to attack Narvik to prevent German ore shipments.
Together with French and Polish mountain infantry, they fought against a veteran German mountain infantry regiment.
After 2 weeks of fighting, they successfully took Narvik!
They then pursued the fleeing German troops but were ordered to return to France where the German invasion had just begun...
