Before World War II, Butzweilerhof in Cologne was one of Germany's most important commercial airports and was known as the "Air Crossroads of the West." During the war, civilian flight operations were largely discontinued, and the airport was used primarily for military purposes. It served, among other things, as an operational, maintenance, and alternate airfield for the Luftwaffe. Additional military facilities, such as shelters and technical installations, were built for these purposes. After the war, Butzweilerhof lost its significance as an airport and later developed into an important location for commerce, culture, and events.
