Today the area is only dominated by the Parthenon.
The great temple, entrusted by Pericles to the architects Ictinus and Callicrates and the artistic direction of Phidias, was built between 447 and 432 BC. It was built in the 1st century BC and replaced the archaic previous building, which was called Hekatòmpedon, which literally means "a hundred feet long".
The Parthenon was built of Pentelic marble in the Doric style and was divided into two main rooms inside: the cell with the statue of Athena
Partenos ("the Virgin"), which was created by Phidias from gold and ivory and was over 12 m high; at the back was the actual Parthenon, a colonnaded hall reserved for young virgins who worshiped the goddess.
The decoration of the friezes, entrusted to Pidias, the greatest sculptor of his time, helped to make the temple even more beautiful and made it an impressive carrier of complex ideological messages.
