To fulfill this role, modifications such as folding wings, reinforced landing gear, a modified canopy to allow submerged blasting, and a tailhook were required.
The Sea Venom served as an interceptor for the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm. The first version was called FAW.20 (Fighter, All-Weather).
The subsequent production version called FAW.21 first flew in April 1954.
She was equipped with a Ghost 104 engine producing 22.1 kN of thrust, a radar system derived from the American APS-57, and a reshaped canopy that provided clearer visibility.
Production of the FAW.21 was discontinued in 1957.
Sea Venoms took part in conflicts such as the Suez War of 1956 and the Cyprus Emergency of 1958.
