It was developed and manufactured by the German Gliding Research Institute (DFS) under the direction of designer Hans Jacobs.
The German glider later served as inspiration for the British Horsa glider.
According to various sources, 450 to 500 of these gliders were manufactured during the war at the Českomoravské strojíren aircraft factory in Prague-Karlín.
