The A-10 is an extremely robust and versatile aircraft, highly popular with pilots due to its high operational readiness. Its primary role is ground attack against tanks, armored vehicles, and installations, as well as close air support for ground troops. Its short takeoff and landing (STL) capability makes it suitable for operation from forward air bases.
The A-10 boasts a long range (800 miles) and endurance, allowing it to maintain a sustained presence in combat zones.
Its maneuverability at low speed and altitude (below 1,000 feet) enables precise and effective target acquisition and weapons delivery over any terrain.
The A-10's first flight took place in May 1972, and a total of 715 aircraft have been built since then.
Originally manufactured by Fairchild, Northrop Grumman has been the prime contractor for the A-10 since 1987.
The Integrated Systems and Aerostructures divisions in New York and St. Augustine, Florida, conduct support and structural modernization programs. More than 350 A-10 aircraft are in service with the US Air Force and the Air National Guard.
