Douglas opted for a design that would minimize size, weight, and complexity. The result was an aircraft that weighed only half the weight specified by the Navy. Its wing was so compact that it did not need to be folded for storage on aircraft carriers.
The A-4E featured a new Pratt & Whitney J52-P-6A engine producing 8,400 lbf (37 kN) of thrust, a strengthened airframe with two additional weapon pylons (for a total of five), improved avionics including TACAN, Doppler navigation radar, radar altimeter, bomb computer, and the AJB-3A low-altitude bombing system. Many aircraft were later upgraded with the J52-P-8 engine producing 9,300 lbf (41 kN) of thrust. A total of 499 units were built.
