The AMX is a ground-attack aircraft used for battlefield reconnaissance, close air support, and reconnaissance missions. It was manufactured until 1999 by AMX International, an Italian-Brazilian joint venture, and is designated A-1 by the Brazilian Air Force.
The AMX can operate day and night at high subsonic speeds and low altitudes, and can even operate from bases with poorly developed or damaged runways. A low infrared signature and reduced radar cross-section contribute to stealth, while the low vulnerability of its structure and systems enhances survivability. Integrated electronic countermeasures (ECM), air-to-air missiles, and nose-mounted cannons provide self-defense capabilities.
