The Fw 200 was developed in 1936 as a commercial aircraft for Lufthansa.
It had a low-wing configuration and was constructed largely of metal.
Its first flight took place in July 1937. Although originally a commercial aircraft converted for military use, the Fw 200C-3/4 Condor made a name for itself as a maritime reconnaissance bomber during World War II.
In this capacity, in conjunction with U-boat packs, it formed one of the most effective combinations of the war, and many a convoy regretted the moment they first spotted a Condor on the horizon.
Meanwhile, the Fw 200B commercial aircraft and the few pre-production C-0 models were put into service as transport aircraft.
Production of the C-1, -2, -3, -4, and -6 subtypes continued until early 1944, and a total of 263 Condors of all versions were built.
Towards the end of the war, when the Fw 200's attack tactics had largely been suppressed, several Condors were used for transport duties for Hitler and his staff.
A planned further development, the Fw 300 with an increased wingspan and more powerful inline engines, never made it beyond the design phase.
