The S.M.79 was the most successful Italian multi-role medium-range bomber of World War II.
The first Sparvieros, developed from a civilian airliner, entered service with the Regia Aeronautica in late 1936, just in time to participate in combat missions over Spain with the Aviacion Legionaria, the Italian contingent supporting the Nationalists.
Its performance was well received by both sides, leading to several export orders.
The S.M.79 was also an effective torpedo bomber and served with the air forces of Brazil, Iraq, Yugoslavia, Romania, and Spain, some until the end of the war.
The Romanians flew it on the Eastern Front from 1941 to 1944—an unprecedented record for an aircraft developed in the early 1930s.
Although known as a three-engine aircraft, several versions were built as twin-engine aircraft with various powerplants, including a 1,220 hp inline Junkers Jumo 211D.
Regardless of the version, most pilots enjoyed its handling, and its ability to return home with significant damage made it even more popular.
The Sparviero saw service throughout North Africa and the Mediterranean until the Italian surrender in September 1943, continuing to fly with both the Italian forces fighting alongside the Allies and units allied with Germany.
