The Americans launched their night fighter program in 1940. The US Army used the P-70 Havoc and the Beaufighter in the fight against the Japanese until the first 45 P-61 Black Widows entered service in October 1943.
The first 37 P-61s were equipped with a four-machine gun turret at the rear of the fuselage; this was removed from subsequent aircraft.
The first unit to use the P-61A in combat was the 6th Night Fighter Squadron in Hawaii.
The Black Widow replaced the Douglas P-70 and the P-38J on May 1, 1944.
