In February 1943, the US Navy initiated an investigation into how the Avenger's performance could be increased.
A design study was then undertaken for an improved Avenger with a 2000 hp R-2800 engine and a 250CE turret. Although the high demand for this engine for other higher priority aircraft types prevented the study from being pursued further, the need for higher engine power for the Avenger was now recognized.
The TBM-3 retained the weapons-equipped wings of the TBF-1C, but instead of the earlier Mk.4 rocket rails, the standardized Mk. 5 rocket launchers (zero-length launchers) were used.
The layout of the cockpit instruments was changed; In addition, to improve the pilot's night vision, the instrument lighting was changed from direct ultraviolet lighting to indirect red lighting.
