Since the air forces of individual countries began to focus more on night bombing, these attacks have become more effective than ever. To counter these night bombing raids, a number of night fighters were put into service.
The Americans launched their night fighter program in 1940. The US Army used the P-70 Havoc and the Beaufighter in the fight against the Japanese until the first 45 P-61 Black Widows entered service in October 1943.
The first 37 P-61s were equipped with a four-machine-gun turret at the rear of the fuselage; this was removed from subsequent aircraft.
However, both the P-61A and the P-61B had shortcomings in terms of top speed and service ceiling. To improve performance, two new, more powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800C engines were installed.
With this performance increase, the maximum speed and altitude rose to 430 mph (approx. 692 km/h) and 30,000 feet (approx. 9,144 m), respectively.
Another change to the P-61C was the wide-angle propellers and special "fighter brakes," which enabled the P-61C to fly significantly tighter turns and avoid overshooting targets.
