The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was an American fighter aircraft of World War II, built by Lockheed.
Developed to the specifications of the United States Army Air Corps, the P-38 was distinguished by its characteristic twin tail booms and a central nacelle housing the cockpit and weapons.
Referred to by the Air Force as the "Fork-Tailed Devil," the P-38 served in a variety of roles, including dive bomber, level bomber, ground attack aircraft, photo reconnaissance missions, and, equipped with underwing fuel tanks, primarily as a long-range escort fighter.
